Saddle up for a guided horse ride in Sharm El Sheikh, along the shoreline or out into the Sinai desert. Egyptian horses are known for their steady temperament, which makes this one of the few adventure activities in Sharm that suits complete beginners and confident riders equally well. Your ride is private, so the pace is yours. If you have never been on a horse, your handler walks you through mounting, holding the reins and stopping before you set off, and stays close for the whole session. If you ride regularly, ask for the longer desert route and a faster pace. What the hour looks like. You are collected from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and driven to the stables. After a short introduction to your horse you head out on one of two routes: the beach route, which follows the water and is the easier of the two, or the desert route, which climbs gently into the dunes behind the resort strip and opens out towards the Sinai mountains. A helmet is available on request, and bottled water comes with you. When to go. Early morning and late afternoon are the two sensible windows. Midday heat is hard on both riders and horses between May and September, and the light for photographs is far better at either end of the day. Sunset rides on the desert route are the first to fill in high season, so ask when you enquire. What to bring and wear. Long trousers are far more comfortable than shorts on a saddle. Closed shoes with a small heel are ideal, trainers are fine, and flip-flops are not. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat you do not mind holding onto in the wind. Good to know. The session is one hour of riding, not counting transfer time. Gratuities and personal spending are not included, and photography is arranged separately if you want it. The ride runs privately for your group, so it can be combined with another Sharm excursion on the same day.
